2020 was a year no one could have prepared for. While 2021 holds many unknowns, READ continues to adapt programs and services to serve our students, in-person and remotely. Rather than slowing us down, the pandemic and its challenges has proven the need for adult literacy education and READ is as busy as ever. That’s why we need you to consider becoming a volunteer adult literacy tutor.
What are your 2021 resolutions? Have you thought about how you can help improve our community? How you can help others? Have you considered helping an adult learn to read? It is life changing for you and the student you help.
READ students have set their goals. Tony* and Liam* want to improve their computer skills in time for READ’s digital literacy class in the spring. Greg wants to read well enough to pass the driver’s license test so he can drive his daughter to school when in-person classes resume. Alex wants to get her GED so she has better job opportunities.
READ needs 30-40 volunteer tutors this spring to work one-to-one and support classroom instruction so READ students can achieve their literacy and life goals. Teaching experience is helpful, but not necessary for volunteer tutors. READ provides free training and support. Most tutors are working remotely so experience using video conferencing tools is helpful.
