It’s time to make your resolutions for 2018. Are you going to lose weight? Get a new job? Read more? Improve your finances? All great goals, but can you keep them?
According to Forbes, just 8% of people achieve their New Year’s Resolutions. 80% of resolutions fail by February. There are many reasons why people fail – they set too many goals, get derailed or set very ambitious goals with no plan to achieve them.
“My New Year’s Resolution List usually starts with the desire to lose between ten and three thousand pounds.” ~ Nia Vardalos
When adults come to The READ Center to improve their literacy skills, they set goals for what they want to achieve. In 2016-2017:
- 110 students achieved a personal goal or sub-goal
- 12 students got a job or better job
- 4 entered other education or training programs
- 2 students got their driver’s license
- 44 students learned computer skills and/or a new software
- 85 increased their confidence and self-esteem
Learning to read as an adult is hard. It takes 100-150 hours of instruction on average to make one grade level gain. At READ, we break goals into achievable parts, stay on track through support and encouragement, and celebrate every achievement. That’s how we keep our goals and resolutions at The READ Center. Good luck with yours in 2018!
The READ Center wishes you and yours a very Happy New Year!
