Since July 2018, READ tutors have volunteered over 5,000 hours which equates to about 20 hours per day of volunteer service. We are so grateful to our more than 100 current volunteers and amazed by the number of individuals in the community who contact us each week to become a volunteer.

On average, READ receives 10 volunteer interest forms a week from individuals who read about our work in the newspaper or social media, or who know a current volunteer who has shared his or her experience. We love sharing information about READ, our students, and adult literacy with new supporters. Since last July, we’ve welcomed 34 new tutors to READ classrooms and tutoring sessions.

READ tutors spend at least two hours a week with students so it’s important they have the support, information and guidance they need to feel comfortable in their role and to be effective with students. For READ to reach more volunteers and ensure that everyone has the skills and resources necessary to serve students, we are taking time this summer to redesign our volunteer on-boarding process, tutor training, and to develop stand-alone training for current tutors to hone their skills. Thank you to all our tutors who have provided feedback on their experiences to help with the process.

Volunteer orientation sessions, classroom observations, and new tutor training will begin again in Fall 2019. Current READ tutors please watch the Tutor Tribute, Tutor Space on Facebook and the READ website for workshops and training opportunities this summer. We are excited to offer new programming for tutors and we hope you’ll join us soon! If you have any questions or concerns contact Program Assistant, Sarah Ramirez: sarah@readcenter.org.
