READ students love field trips! Field trips offer students a chance to get out of the classroom and enrich their learning experience. They get to apply their literacy skills to real-life situations, experience new and exciting places, and have a ton of fun, too! Read about several field trips READ students have taken.
Secret Sandwich Society
Learning to read a map is an important life skill. When the Franklin Street Library class wanted to take a walking tour to practice reading maps, teacher Don jumped at the opportunity. The class walked the area around Library and took note of the restaurants they wanted to try. But it didn’t end there – they also researched the menus of each restaurant they liked and selected one where they had lunch together. Read more about their adventure from Don.
A Raisin In The Sun
When this classic play came to Richmond, READ students were there to see it. The play, based on Langston Hughes’ poem “Harlem,” tells the story of an African American family’s struggles. For some students, it was the first time they had ever seen a live play or gone to a theater. The students even talked to the cast after the show! They enjoyed learning more about each character and how the actors prepared for their roles.
American Civil War Museum – Tredegar
The Franklin Street Library class put their map skills to work again when they met at the Civil War Museum to learn about the war and Richmond’s role in it. They spent time researching how to get to the museum and did historical background reading. Once there, they learned about Abraham Lincoln, cannons, factories, and more. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) Jazz Nights
The VMFA offers free jazz nights, and READ students, tutors and staff have taken advantage of the opportunity to hear live music and experience a new place together. While there, students explored the museum on their own and with tutors and staff to see the wonderful collections housed at the VMFA.
James River Field Trip
Always ready for a field trip, the Franklin Street Library class studied Richmond history and then decided to see it for themselves. Students, tutors and teacher Don met at the Canal Walk for a trip down the James River. Did you know there were once locks on the James River and that tobacco was traded out of warehouses that are now lofts, restaurants, and offices? READ Center students do! December 3rd, 2019 is Giving Tuesday. On Giving Tuesday, you have the opportunity to support these field trips and other services. READ has a goal to raise $2,500. Donate as part of the Giving Tuesday campaign and your gift will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $1250.
